Materials & Applications

When it comes to 3D printing, choosing the right material is crucial to achieving the best results. Each type of plastic has its own unique properties, making it suitable for specific applications. Below is an overview of the most commonly used 3D printing materials and what they're best suited for:

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is one of the most widely used and eco-friendly materials in 3D printing. It’s biodegradable and made from renewable resources such as cornstarch.

  • Pros: Easy to print, odorless, available in many colors.
  • Best for: Prototypes, decorative items, models without mechanical stress.

Typical applications:

  • Display models and figurines
  • Architectural models
  • Custom signs and logos
  • Decorative home items (e.g. vases, planters)

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

ABS is stronger and more heat-resistant than PLA but requires a heated print bed.

  • Pros: Durable, impact-resistant, can handle higher temperatures.
  • Best for: Functional parts, enclosures, toys (like LEGO), components that need to be tough.

Typical applications:

  • Automotive parts (dash components, brackets)
  • Enclosures for electronics
  • Toys (e.g. LEGO bricks)
  • Mechanical tools and prototypes

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)

PETG offers a good balance between the ease of PLA and the strength of ABS. It’s slightly flexible, water-resistant, and food-safe.

  • Pros: Strong, slightly flexible, moisture-resistant.
  • Best for: Mechanical parts, bottles, containers, household items

Typical applications:

  • Water bottles and food containers
  • Mechanical parts like hinges and clips
  • Protective face shields
  • Light-load structural components

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

TPU is a flexible, rubber-like material that bends easily but is also highly durable.

  • Pros: Flexible, wear-resistant, shock-absorbing.
  • Best for: Phone cases, seals, grips, elastic joints.

Typical applications:

  • Phone cases and protective covers
  • Vibration dampeners
  • Shoe soles or wearable components
  • Seals, gaskets, and flexible joints

Nylon (Polyamide)

Nylon is an extremely strong and wear-resistant material with high tensile strength. It also offers excellent chemical resistance and flexibility.

  • Pros: Tough, durable, flexible, chemical-resistant.
  • Best for: Industrial applications, gears, load-bearing functional parts.

Typical applications:

  • Gears and mechanical components
  • Tool handles and jigs
  • Industrial connectors and housings
  • Functional prototypes for engineering use
